At the Bren School, Gokce specializes in Economics and Politics of the Environment with a focus in Strategic Environmental Communication. She received her B.S. in Chemical-Biological Engineering and Molecular Biology and Genetics from Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2016. She designed an algal biofuel production plant as her capstone project prior to graduation from college. Throughout her college years, she has been involved and took on leadership roles in major engineering associations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. She is also an award-winning Model United Nations (MUN) delegate and served on numerous leadership positions in nearly 10 international MUN conferences.
After graduation and before joining Bren School, Gokce completed an internship at Istanbul Policy Center, a renowned think-tank based in Istanbul, Turkey, as research assistant for the Climate Change Research Group. During her time there, she studied techno-institutional carbon lock-in mechanisms, transnational networks of environmental NGOs and Mexico’s climate policy within the frameworks of security and justice.
Gokce currently writes analysis and opinion pieces on Turkish and environmental politics as an environmental columnist for the news outlet Independent Turkey. This summer, she will work at the United Nations Environment Programe in New York City as an Intergovernmental Policy Coordination and Interagency Affairs Intern. Gokce aims to become a policy analyst after graduation, specializing in international environmental security, such as food, water and energy issues. She wants to dedicate her expertise to those who are the most vulnerable to the political and economic problems that will arise from climate change. In her free time, she enjoys writing for her blog, biking around Santa Barbara and immortalizing the blessings of Southern California’s beautiful nature with her camera.
